Feghouli's Rescinded Red Is West Ham's 4th Successful Appeal Since Start of Last Season

Published on: 03 January 2017

West Ham's successful appeal against Sofiane Feghouli's dismissal against Manchester United was the fourth time the club has seen a red card rescinded since August 2015, leading many fans to question why referees are so readily andunfairly sending off Hammers players.

Captain Mark Noble saw his suspension overturned for a red card he picked up in a 3-0 win against Liverpool in September 2015 - the midfielder was deemed to have fouled Danny Ings when play had already stopped despite appearing to win the ball cleanly.

The following February, Cheikhou Kouyate was wrongly sent off in an FA Cup tie against Blackburn when he was harshly adjudged to have denied Rovers defender Adam Henley a goalscoring opportunity when the player wouldn't have reached it the ball.

Kouyate again had a red card rescinded by the FA just two months later in April after West Ham complained of 'wrongful dismissal' following a challenge on Crystal Palace forward Dwight Gayle. "I am fed up with appealing," were Slaven Bilic's words at the time.

What was more frustrating for supportersabout Feghouli's red card this week was that referee Mike Dean so eagerly punished the Algerian but let severalworse offences go later in the game without any form of punishment being handed out.

Feghouli's was the third red card shown to someone in a West Ham shirt in the Premier League this season. One of those was unfairly shown to Aaron Cresswell against Crystal Palace. But because it came as two yellow cards, West Ham were not allowed to appeal.

Cresswell's first caution was given for an apparent 'dive' in the penalty area despite there seeming to be contact with Palace player Yohan Cabaye. Bilic later described the second of the two as just plain 'wrong' after minimal arm contact with winger Wilfried Zaha.

Premier League red cards not rescinded since the start of last season include Winston Reid's dismissal against Tottenham a few short months ago in November, un-appealable, and Adrian's in August 2015 for which an appeal was submitted but rejected.

Carl Jenkinson was sent off for a last-man challenge against Bournemouth, also in August 2015, while James Collins was given his marching orders against Watford in November 2015.
