FIFA President Defends Trial Run of Video Replays After Confusion Reigns at Club World Cup Matches

Published on: 16 December 2016

Gianna Infantino has defended the use of video replays at this year's Club World Cup, and claims that the technology has produced "positive results".

The FIFA President stated that trialling the technology was proving to be a success, despite also admitting that football's world governing body was still learning the best possible way to utilise it.

Video replays have been used during both matches at the international club tournament in Japan over the past week, with some quarters criticising the usefulness of the technology after confusion reigned during Real Madrid's eventual 2-0 victory over Club America on Thursday.

In quotes published by the Daily Mail, however, Infantino stated his belief that video replays had been of massive benefit to match officials thus far, and would help improve transparency within the game as a whole.

He said: "The results are extremely positive. Of course there are learnings, of course there are a few topics that we have to look into and discuss in more detail, but the result is extremely positive.

"Why? Because the referee has been able to take the right decision and justice and transparency have been brought to the game."

Marco Van Basten, Head of Technical Development at FIFA, had claimed that the technology currently took "a few seconds too much" during a couple of incidents in Kashima Antlers' 3-0 win over Atletico Nacional on Wednesday, but was happy enough with the manner in which video replays had worked overall so far.

He added: "In the first game with Kashima, the referee didn't see the situation and the video assistant referee saw a clear tackle so he interfered.

"The referee watched the television and said `OK, you are right and I give a penalty.' So in the end it took a few seconds too much but it was the right decision."

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, though, appeared less than impressed when he seemingly mocked the technology for causing chaos after he had notched Los Blancos' second goal against Club America 24 hours later.

The Portuguese captain allegedly said: "The television doesn't work, huh?" before laughing after Paraguayan referee Enrique Caceres eventually allowed the goal to stand without having watched the incident back via the replay.

Real and Kashima face off in Sunday's final for the chance to lift the Club World Cup.
