Finance Ministry released $5m for Black Stars' Africa Cup of Nations campaign: Sports Minister reveals $2m surplus

Ghana's Sports Minister, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, today in Parliament revealed that the estimated budget for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament was USD 8,506,450.00.

USD 5,071,840.36 was released by the Finance Ministry. Of this amount, USD 3,070,067.81 was utilized, leaving a surplus of USD 2,001,772.55.

Despite the early exit of the team from the tournament, Hon. Ussif detailed how USD 3,070,067.81 was expended on various expenses including per diems, flight arrangements for the team, medicals, equipment, logistics, and hospitality.

Ghana exited the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the group stage with two points.

"Mr. Speaker, our estimated budget for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament was USD 8,506,450.00 to cater for team's pre-tournament and the tournament phases (group stages, 1/6 stage, quarter-final, semi-final and final)," he said.

"Out of the USD 8,506,450.00, USD 5,071,840.36, was released by Ministry of Finance of which USD 3,070,067.81 was spent on per diems, flight arrangements for the team, medicals, equipment, logistics, and hospitality.

"This resulted in a surplus of USD 2,001,772.55, after our exit from the tournament," he ended.
