Five facts about CAF Dr. Joseph Kabungo, who died at Moshood Abiola Stadium

The Football Association of Zambia has officially announced the death of Joseph Kabungo, the medical doctor for the Confederation of African Football, who died on Tuesday at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

Dr. Kabungo has shocked football fans across the continent especially in his home country Zambia. The sad incident occurred after the referee ended the game at the MKO Stadium.

According to an official statement issued by the Nigeria Football Federation on Wednesday, Kabungo died of heart failure and was not beaten as previously claimed.

Kabungo was reported to be CAF's doping control officer for the second leg of the West African rivalry's qualifying match for the 2022 World Cup championships in Qatar.

  • Kabungo was a member of the support staff of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations’ winning team.
  • He was Zambia’s national team medical doctor from 2003 to 2016.
  • He was a member of the Medical Committee under the Local Organising Committee of the 2017 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
  • Kabungo once served as the goalkeeper of Mufulira Wanderers, acclaimed to be Zambia’s most successful football club.
  • He once served as Chongwe and Siavonga District Chief Health Medical Officer.
