FONSECA: "OUR FINAL BALL WAS ALWAYS WRONG"

Published on: 04 October 2019

Roma's coach Paulo Fonseca insisted he was pleased with his side's efforts, following Thursday's 1-1 draw with Wolfsberg. Leonardo Spinazzola's early goal was cancelled out by Michael Liendl's long-range strike, as both sides continued to set the pace in Group J.

Did the team possibly make too many mistakes today?

"We knew it wouldn't be an easy game. We were up against a good side and we dominated the whole match, but made mistakes with our final ball. We created so many chances, but didn't get our final pass right, particularly in situations such as after our opponents scored a fine goal. We just didn't manage to create the right chances to score after that."

Was your opponents' high press one of the key aspects of the game?

"At certain points it wasn't easy to break out from the pressure, particularly down the flanks, but I think we managed to easily play our game in our opponents' half. As I said, we made the wrong choices in the attacking third. We could've scored four or five times. We made plenty of changes to the team, but still could've done better up front."

You're performing at a high level technically, so why were there mistakes with certain passes and ball control? Is it a technical or tactical problem?

"It's both things. We knew about the opposition and the way they press down the flanks, so we had to move the ball quickly, but we just didn't manage to create the passing lines that we needed. We did also make some technical mistakes at times."
