Former Ghana defender John Paintsil defends Black Stars calamitous AFCON 2023 performance in Ivory Coast

Former Ghana international John Painstil has jumped to the defense of the Black Stars following their abysmal performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Ghana bowed out at group stage after failing to win any of their games at the just ended tournament in the West African country. The Black Stars drew two and lost one, finishing third in Group B.

It was the four-time African champions second consecutive elimination from the continental showpiece.

Expressing his view on Ghana's performance at the just ended AFCON, the former Fulham and West Ham player indicated the Black Stars are still in the rebuilding phase and will need time to gel.

“When we talk about the Black Stars, the current performance and all, they just returned from the World Cup (in Qatar). They qualified us.” he said on UTV's United Showbiz.

“The big game in Nigeria, they went there, they qualified. We need to understand that they are still rebuilding; the team has new faces.”

John Paintsil played at the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups for Ghana. He was also part of the squad that reach the finals of the 2010 AFCON.
