Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba lauds NFF appointment of Finidi George as assistant coach

Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has commended the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) appointment of Finidi George as assistant coach.

Nigeria failed to go past Black Stars of Ghana in the final play-offs of the World Cup after a 1-1 draw in Abuja following a scoreless draw four days earlier in Kumasi last month.

This resulted in Augustine Eguavoen stepping down as head coach and assuming his role as Technical Director of  the Nigeria senior national team.

"George has played at the highest level and, therefore, in that respect the NFF (Nigerian Football Federation have made the right appointment," Ikpeba said.

The 48-year-old also said that choosing George for the role is a political decision and has ben motivated by somebody’s personal interests.

Meanwhile, the NFF has opted to employ an expatriate coach for the Super Eagles with the 2023 AFCON qualifiers being the next big assignment.

Former Italy goalkeeper Walter Zenga has expressed interest in coaching Nigeria, according to reports.

Zenga is understood to have already submitted his resume, through his agent, to the Technical and Development Committee of the (NFF).

Alberto “Jimmy” Fontana, who is Zenga’s Intermediary, confirmed that the 62-year-old, is interested in the three time African champions’ coaching role, disclosing further that his client’s last job was at Cagliari.
