Fowler: Liverpool must spend £200M not to fall back

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler feels a £200 million spend is needed this summer for the club to move forward.

Fowler, who scored 183 goals in 369 games for the Reds, thinks a huge summer outlay will be required by all the top teams in the Premier League this transfer window.

Fowler, who was making a wider point about Tottenham's £54m sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City, told The Mirror: "That's the wonderful world of the Premier League these days - you may need to spend £200m to stay still.

"City have spent the best part of £200m already, Chelsea will strengthen massively and United have spent £150m so far, with no sign of stopping.

"Arsenal have made a couple of decent-looking buys, too, Liverpool no doubt will and Everton are pushing with their impressive summer so far. So, if Spurs stay still in the transfer market, it could see them go backwards rapidly.

"I know there is an argument to be made that the money was too much to turn down, but this is the Premier League we are talking about.

"None of the top sides needs to cash in, and none of them needs to sell players to direct rivals."
