Gareth Southgate Planning End to West Ham Talisman's England Exile With Possible Recall in March

Published on: 08 February 2017

Andy Carroll's recent form for West Ham United could see him rewarded with a recall to the senior England national side.

New Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate is reportedly set to attend the Hammer's home match against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, and he willbe keeping a close eye on the striker's performance, according to the Daily Mail. Carroll was substituted with a slight groin strain against Southampton last Saturday, but is expected to feature against Tony Pulis' side at the weekend.

Carroll has notched four goals in his last four league games for Slaven Bilic's side, and his displays have not gone unnoticed by Southgate as the England manager begins planning his 23-man squad selection for the upcoming friendly with Germany and 2018 World Cup qualifier against Lithuania.

West Ham's rise back up the Premier League standings - the Irons now sitting in ninth position after a turbulent first half of the campaign - has been put down to Carroll's return from a lengthy knee injury, and the 28-year-old's goalscoring form has helped West Ham pick up nine points out of the last 12 available.

Carroll has featured just nine times for England's senior side since he made his debut back in November 2010, with a multitude of spells on the sidelines and erratic form preventing him from building on the caps he has received.

Carroll's only two strikes at international level came against Ghana in March 2011 and in the 3-2 victory over Sweden at Euro 2012, but the ex-Newcastle and Liverpool forward has not had the chance to build upon his appearances for the Three Lions since October 2012.

No discussion a fit and free scoring Andy Carroll walks straight into any current England squad

The 28-year-old recently revealed that he still harboured hopes of donning the famous white jersey again before his playing career ends, but insisted that his priority was on helping West Ham climb away from the relegation zone.

He had said: Obviously, I'd love to be back in the England squad, and if the call comes, fantastic. That's what I want, but instead of looking too far in front, I'm just concentrating on West Ham.

Southgate is also expected to run the rule over Carroll's compatriot Michail Antonio when he visits the London Stadium for West Ham's clash with the Baggies.
