Gareth Southgate Planning to Strip Wayne Rooney of England Captaincy in Favour of Liverpool Star

New England manager GarethSouthgate is planning a major change to the England squad by stripping Wayne Rooney of the national captaincy in favour of Liverpool's Jordan Henderson, accordingtheDaily Express.


Henderson led the English side in two of the four matches under Southgate's role as interim manager, following the omission of Rooney from the squad due to injury.

The former Middlesbrough manager is keen to mould the team in his own imageby making some changes to the Three Lions' squad, with the concern of captaincy being a top priority.


The 46-year-old has signed a four-yeardeal offered to him by the FA after a successful run as the interimmanager, in which he remained unbeaten in four matches following the dismissal of Sam Allardyce.


Following his appointment as England manager, Southgate said: "I'm extremely proud to be appointed England manager. I'm also conscious that getting the job is one thing, now I want to do the job successfully.

I've thoroughly enjoyed working with the players over these past four games and I think there's huge potential. I'm determined to give everything I have to give the country a team that they're proud of and one that they're going to enjoy watching play and develop. For me, the hard work starts now.�


FA technical director Dan Ashworth also commented on the official appointment: "Gareth will be starting to think about some of the changes he wants to make for March and going forwards.


"Like any new manager does in any position, they want to stamp their own personality on it, make a few changes and make it more like his own.�

England's in which Southgate will be in charge are a friendly in Germany and a World Cup Qualifier against Lithuania in the new year.


Giving Southgate has plenty of time to assess the quality amongst the England squad and make the changes he sees necessary.
