Interim England manager Gareth Southgate is set to drop captain Wayne Rooney for the upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Slovenia, according to a report bytalkSport.

Rooney, 30, has faced criticism fromsupporters in recent weeks, largely due tohis ineffectual performancesfor the Three Lions in recent fixtures, he even receivedboos from some fans at Wembley during the 2-0 win over Malta.

And now it looks as though Southgate has caved into the pressure, reportedly leaving him out of England's upcoming encounter with Slovenia.

The Manchester United captain has also been demoted to the bench at club level, with Jose Mourinho preferring quick, young players like Marcus Rashford andJesse Lingard.

While Southgate defended Rooney's performance on Saturday by saying he was 'pleased' with his display, the interim boss is set to shake it up on Tuesday by replacing Rooney with Tottenham holding-midfielder Eric Dier.

Dier, who scored a fantastic free-kick for England against Russia at Euro 2016, was one of England's stand-out players at the tournament.

With Rooney being knocked back to the bench, Liverpool's Jordan Henderson or Chelsea's Gary Cahill will most likely captain the side on Tuesday.

Southgate will be hoping to maintain England's 100 per cent start to Group F, which has seen winsagainstSlovakia and Malta without conceding a single goal.

Following Tuesday's clash with Slovenia, England will wait one month beforefacing historical rivals Scotland at Wembley Stadium.

It will be the first time the bordering nations have met in a competitive fixture for 17 years, with the last meeting coming in a Euro 2000 play-off game back in 1999.
