Gasperini needs reinforcements

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini says that the club desperately needs new signings if they are to compete in the coming season.

The side are in contention on three fronts again this campaign; Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Europa League where they have one foot in the play-off round after beating Hapoel Haifa 4-1 in the first leg of the third qualifying round.

The transfer campaign has unfortunately been very sad and very small.

Though Atalanta's season is already underway due to their involvement in Europe, their league campaign begins next Monday with a home match against Frosinone and coach Gasperini says the squad as it stands, is too small to cope with their hectic league and cup schedule.

Ahead of the second leg of the Hapoel Haifa tie, he told a press conference: "I wanted to play the friendly with Pro Piacenza on Friday morning, but we don't have enough and I had to cancel it,.

"The transfer campaign has unfortunately been very sad and very small.

"The squad is in difficulty because of that. The club knows what is needed because I've said it constantly, they made an important budget available but a lot of youngsters have arrived who aren't ready yet."

Gaspeirini sparked speculation over his own future by suggesting that if the squad isn't strengthened a new coach may be needed if expectations are to be met.

Atalanta finished seventh in the Serie A last season and one major deal they have pushed through this summer has seen Duvan Zapata arrive on a two-year loan deal from Sampdoria with an option to buy at the end of the two years.

Atalanta are 1/3 to get their league campaign off to a winning start on Monday night with Frosinone 9/1 and the draw 15/4. Zapata is 4/1 to score the first goal.
