GATTUSO: "THE LADS NEED TO BE PRAISED"

Published on: 30 January 2019

Gennaro Gattuso spoke in the post-match press conference after Milan-Napoli 2-0. The Rossoneri are into the semi-finals, and they will face the winner of tomorrow's match between Inter and Lazio.
"The lads need to be praised, not myself. They all did well, including those who haven’t played for a little while. We need to do well in terms of making the most of the characteristics of everyone. The choice we made to change the two full-backs and two wingers paid off. We needed to bring freshness into the team against this Napoli side. We’ll enjoy the evening and then immediately focus on the league."

The Rossoneri's coach spoke also about the defence: "We work on our defence every day. But without the hard work done by Paquetá, Kessié, such great performances aren’t possible. Everybody is working in the correct way. Being compact between the lines is the only solution that is on offer."

Gattuso praised the spirit of his team: "When players like Piatek and Paquetá play and when you’re allowed to have a breather before going up to attack, it changes the way you perform on the pitch. It makes you want to get back and defend as well as give something more for your teammates. When you’re having fun and hurting your opponents, you have an increased desire and spirit to work even when the tempo is high. This is what has changed for the better."

About the match-winner Krzysztof Piatek said: "Apart from his double, which he invented out of nothing, seeing a player come face to face and battle the way he did against Koulibaly is really incredible. It wasn’t easy. I would like to congratulate him. But now there is a need to stay calm, work hard and not forget about Cutrone. Patrik is someone who has given us a lot."

Finally Gattuso spoke about Laxalt and Bakayoko: "A short while ago, Laxalt wasn’t playing at the levels he can. Diego has struggled this season, we expect more and he knows that. He provided an assist for Piatek tonight, so I’m happy. It’s often the case that great performances bring about changes in attitude: I want professionality and consistency from Bakayoko. He needs to go under the radar, be respectful, not make mistakes and not arrive late. In addition to growing exponentially on the pitch, I want him to remain strong off it as well."
