Gerard Pique Targets Referees After Watching La Liga Rivals Real Madrid Win in Controversial Style

Published on: 26 February 2017

Barcelona stalwart Gerard Pique has hit out against the referees and officials of La Liga, following a controversial turnaround that saw Real Madrid come from two goals down, to beat Villarreal 3-2 on Sunday.

The main source of controversy was a penalty awarded for Los Blancos, for a questionable handball decision against Villarreal's Bruno Soriano. The penalty was converted by Cristiano Ronaldo - making him the all-time leading penalty scorer in La Liga's history, before Alvaro Morata scored a late winner.

The three points means thatReal goback ahead of Barcelona in the table. Barca themselves came out victorious in a hard fought match against Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid.

The contrasting styles of victory for Barca and Madrid seemed to frustrate Pique, who took to Twitter to slate the refereeing decision of his rivals' match. The translation of the tweet above reads:

"Against the same teams. 8 points. Those clips are from the Madrid press, if you doubted."

The images are in reference to the contrasting refereeing decisions that Barcelona have not had awarded, against the decisions that Madrid have hadincorrectlyawarded to them.

The matches Pique was highlighting were matches against Malaga, and most recently Villarreal. After Barca's draw with the Yellow Submarine, Pique was also seen gesturing towards La Liga president Javier Tebas, before standing by his criticisms in the post-match press conference.

Pique's countryman and rival Sergio Ramos was unphased by his comments, however, telling the press after Los Blancos' victory"It would've surprised me if Messi had put it [...]We all know how Pique is."
