GFA does not pay Black Stars coach - Henry Asante Twum tells Kwesi Appiah

Ghana Football Association (GFA) spokesperson Henry Asante Twum has disclosed that former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah is owed by the government and not the FA.

The 59-year-old gaffer is demanding his $185,000 unpaid salary arrears from the Football Association - five months' salary and one match-winning bonus - but the GFA says government must settle the outstanding salary.

The 59-year-old has written to the GFA through his lawyers demanding the full payment of the debt.

However, Henry Asante has denied that his outfit owes the former Al Khartoum Watani trainer unpaid salaries.

"The GFA does not pay the coach - it’s the state that pays the coach," Twum told the BBC.

"The GFA is the employer of the head coach of the national team but his salary is paid by the state. He [Appiah] wrote to the GFA [demanding his outstanding salaries and bonuses] and we forwarded his letter to the [sports] ministry.

"It is the ministry that must pay him, not the GFA."

"Kwasi Appiah has been in and out of the Black Stars for so many years and he knows that it is not the FA that pays him."

"It’s very strange to read what is going round because it’s not the FA that pays the head coach of Black Stars, it is the Government of Ghana. That has been the constitution. The Government owes him."

Kwesi Appiah's second stint, which lasted two-and-half years, ended in December 2019 and was replaced by his assistant, Charles Kwablan Akonnor.
