GFA set to sack Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton on Friday - Reports

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) are set to sack Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton on Friday.

The former Premier League coach has come under pressure after suffering back-to-back defeats in the October friendly games.

Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat against Mexico before a humiliating 4-0 defeat against the USA.

Hughton who signed a 21-month deal in March earlier this year had a good start and went five, winning three and drawing two without a defeat.

The 64-year-old steered the Black Stars to secure qualification to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled to be hosted in Ivory Coast next year.

Following the back-to-back defeats, reports suggested that the Executive Council of the FA decided to sack the Irish-born manager.

The report adds that the hierarchy of the Ghana FA are not convinced Hughton can lead the side to qualify for the 2026 World Cup that will be hosted in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

However, a number of the Executive Council members are said to be opposed to the idea of sacking the Black Stars coach just a week before the start of the World Cup Qualifiers.

Chris Hughton was expected to name the Black Stars squad for the World Cup Qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros, but the announcement has been delayed.

Some members of the Executive Council have not hidden their dislike for Chris Hughton with some calling for his head in different interviews.

Although Hughton’s contract will expire at the end of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the GFA is prepared to terminate it.

At the moment, the country's football governing body are waiting for approval from government since they will settle the compensation. Hughton's contract runs out in February 2024.

At the moment, Chris Hughton is aware of the decision of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to relieve him of his duties as the head coach of the team.

Meanwhile, assistant coach, Goerge Boateng will be named as the interim coach for the team for the two Group I opening games against Madagascar and Comoros slated to be played on November 17 and 21 respectively.
