Nigeria midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has expressed his sympathies with Ghana for the embarrassing way in which the Black Stars exited the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Fulham man said the manner in which Ghana was sad to see because the two teams were based in the same hotel in Abidjan.

“Of course there’s a lot of rivalry between us two. There are a lot of people that I respect. I have a lot of friends outside the team that are Ghanaians,” the AFCON runner-up told Joel Bortey in an interview.

“It’s almost like you want them to do well so you can play against them and prove a point in the competition but it’s a shame because the way they exited with the sort of players they have was a bit sad to see.”

Ghana exited the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after failing to secure a win in any of their three group-stage matches.

The Black Stars garnered just two points and finished third in Group B.

Despite a chance to qualify for the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams, Ghana's elimination was confirmed when Cameroon defeated The Gambia, leading to their early exit from the tournament.
