Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has rated Southampton star Mohammed Salisu among the top three defenders in the English Premier League this season.

The 22-year-old has been outstanding in the ongoing campaign for the Saints, featuring 29 times in the Premier League.

In an interview with Peace FM monitored by Footballghana.com, Gyan, who is the all-time topscorer for Ghana rated Salisu among the top three defenders in the Premier League.

“I watch him as fan because he is doing well at Southampton. I think he is one of the top three defenders in the Premier League and he being a Ghanaian I think he is selling the country. He is performing well but I don’t know if he wants to play for the national team”

Salisu has received numerous callups to the Black Stars for both the AFCON and World Cup qualifiers in the past.

The Southampton defender has received the call up from four coaches of the Black Stars since 2019 and has refused to honor the invitation.

Asked if Salisu must be in Ghana team, he said, “Why not, he is not only the best defender in the Premiership, the Premiership is the best league in the World and if he is rated among the top three defenders definitely, he is eligible to play for the national team if only he is in the plans of the coach and he (Salisu) has in mind to play definitely he should be ready for the national team but it will depend on him and the technical team”

Mohammed Salisu who has been impressive for Southampton is expected to rescind his decision not to play for the national team before the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana has been paired in group H against Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.

The biggest soccer mundial will be staged in Qatar between November and December this year.
