Ghana Premier League

In Ghana’s football system, the top professional football league or division is called The Ghana Premier League. Ghana Premier League was formed officially back then in 1956, right after the 1953/54 season’s Gold Coast Club Competition. Ghana Football Association (GNA) prepared and organized the Ghana Premier League. The Premier League was ranked in the 11th position in the whole Africa by the The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) in the year of 2001-2010. The Ghana Premier League was also ranked 65th in the world ranking. The ranking was made by IFFHS in the 1st Decade of the 21st Century (2001-2010) on 4 February 2014. Just like other leagues, the top 3 bottom teams are being relegated to the lower division by the end of the season (Ghana Division One League).

There are in total 18 teams that compete in the Ghana Premier League. Many years, the Ghana Premier League has been won the most by two teams, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak. These two clubs have won more Ghana Premier League than any other clubs in the first division. There are other winners, but these two absolutely dominated the Ghana Premier League Up until now, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak have about 24 and 20 league titles. Meanwhile all the other clubs have a combined 14 titles. The Ghana Premier League normally takes place for about 8 months from January to September. It is very unlike other leagues, where the league seasons always extend into another year, the Ghana Premier League season is concluded in the whole year.

The 2021/22 Ghana Premier League Season

This year's Premier League season is the 65th one. It is the 2021/22 in the Ghana Top Professional First Division. The 2021/22 season started early on 29 October 2021.  Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko , the two giants, are fighting for the title of the season. All of this is no surprise because these two teams are the superpowers of Ghanaian soccer but Asante Kotoko has been dominant in recent history, winning a total of 4 titles in the last 8 seasons.

For the prediction, champions Hearts of Oak SC will defend the title as the competition welcomes three newly promoted sides, Real Tamale United FC, Bibiani Gold Stars SC and Accra Lions FC to the top flight. The Premier League will end until Sunday, June 19, 2022. The African Association will take precaution to realign its football calendar after the disruptions caused by Coronavirus.

Hearts of Oak have a good chance in defending the title, as with the captain Fatawu Mohammed, who plays exceptionally well in defending the wall of Hearts of Oak. Asanta Kotoko, with their captain, the goalkeeper Felix Annan, will always tails Hearts of Oak in pursuing the title. The fights between these two exceptional clubs will always welcome the fans. However, based on recent history in the last decades, Asanta Kotoko, the Porcupine Warriors have been better in terms of head to head. The stats were better but they just got unlucky.

Besides those two champions, there were also dangerous teams. For example, WAFA (West African Football Academy), which back then 5 years ago (2016/2017 season) managed to trash the Hearts of Oak with the score 5-0. Jalilu Haruna Mola, the forwarder of WAFA is very much loved to make the title interesting enough.

Another team that is worth watching is Aduana Stars F.C. Aduana Stars F.C have made the whole world surprised by their record in winning the league, with the attempt of winning total point  53.  Based on history, this underdog has a huge chance to annoy the two giants (Hearts of Oak and Asanta Kotoko). Their defence, with the Goalkeeper, Flavien Kouassi Kongoza Jean, will be key to disturb the title race. In conclusion, four teams could be joining the title race; Hearts of Oak, Asanta Kotoko, West African Football Academy )WAFA), and Aduana Stars F.C. The two giants can have a challenge from those underdogs.
