Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has voiced his strong dissatisfaction with the quality of players in the Ghana Premier League.

The Ododiodoo Member of Parliament (MP) shared his concerns during an interview with Citi Sports, highlighting the urgent need for significant improvements within the league.

Vanderpuye, who also boasts a background in sports journalism, expressed his dismay over the current state of Ghana football and the Premier League, asserting that substantial efforts must be undertaken to raise the standard of play.

He specifically pointed out the disparity between the Ghana league and those of other African nations, citing recent performances by the national team, the Black Stars, as evidence of the country's lagging progress in the sport.

"They [Ghana Premier League players] are nowhere near the premier league teams' quality; very poor. The players are substandard. We must do something about the local league.”

The 2023/24 Ghana Premier League is schedulled to start in September.
