Ghana pulls out of Eagles friendly – Report

Published on: 18 April 2019

The much-anticipated friendly match between the Super Eagles and the Black Stars of Ghana has been cancelled, according to a report by Ghanaian football portal footy-ghana.com.

The Super Eagles were billed to play Senegal and Ghana in two preparatory games for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The two sworn ‘enemies’ were expected to renew their rivalry ahead of the tournament but reports in the Ghanaian media suggest that the game has been called off.

According to FootyGhana, after the draw in Cairo,  NFF officials reached out to Ghana’s deputy Youth and Sports Minister and sounded him on the possibility of a friendly game, however, no follow up was done.

It’s reported that Ghana opted against playing Nigeria because the date and venue proposed by the NFF do not fit into their three-week preparatory plans for the tournament.

“They actually wanted to play us [Ghana] in Nigeria and they had discussions with only the Deputy Sports Minister (Perry Okudzeto) But we may be in United Arab Emirates which will be difficult” as quoted by footyghana.

Management of Ghana’s team have decided to hold a three-week pre-tournament camping in Dubai where they will play a set of friendly matches.

However, the proposed friendly game between Eagles and Senegal will come off after both countries confirmed their availability for the match.

A meeting between the technical heads of the two countries has been scheduled for a date and venue to be fixed.

The NFF are still negotiating for another game for the Eagles before the AFCON.
