The ongoing tournament is being played by national teams of countries based in West Africa but with players plying their trade in their respective local leagues.

Having won the previous edition of the tournament, the Black Stars B team of Ghana were hoping to get off to a good start when they locked horns with the Scorpions of Gambia.

Coach Maxwell Konadu’s men started the match on a good note and dominated right from the whistle for the first half.

Later in the game, the Gambians enjoyed some possession after their opponent failed to get on the scoresheet. The game dragged a bit at the half-hour mark which eventually led to a goalless scoreline at the end of the first 45 minutes.

A solitary strike from Joseph Esso on the 67th minute of the second half handed Ghana the needed victory to start the campaign with Gambia squandering a glorious opportunity from the penalty kick.

Ghana goes into the next stage of the tournament with loads of confidence as they aim to retain the WAFU Championship.
