Ghanaian coach Gerald Asamoah has expressed his delight to the heroics of Schalke 04’s new sensation Matthew Hoppe as he insists that he expects other young players at the club to take inspiration from his rise to the first team.

The coach of the U-23 team of the Bundesliga club knows all about the new American star who netted a hat-trick for the team in the 4-0 win against Hoffenheim over the weekend.

Speaking to the kicker on Matthew Hoppe, coach Gerald Asamoah was full of praise while noting that the teenager is hungry to improve and continues working his socks off.

“I know his weaknesses but I also know what he excels at – namely his absolute desire in front of goal and his composure,” the ex-Schalke player now turned coach said.

He continued, “…not only because he took all three of his goals well, but because he is constantly developing. He’s able to do that because he constantly questions himself. And you can see where that can lead.”

In addition to the praise, coach Gerald Asamoah noted that Matthew Hope’s rise to become a star in the Schalke first team should motivate other players from the youth team to work hard to reach the top.

“He’s an inspiration in every respect for all young players, and especially for my players in the U23s. They’ve now seen again that the path to the first team is always open to them – that’s historically been the case at Schalke perhaps more than at many other clubs,” the gaffer said.
