Ex-England star Danny Mills has accused Dutch-born defender of Ghanaian descent Jeremie Frimpong of ditching Celtic to join Bayer Leverkusen because of money.

The youngster after 18 months in Scotland with the Premiership giants has moved to the German Bundesliga where he has signed for Leverkusen.

“It was the right time to leave Celtic because it was about a big club like Leverkusen coming, rather than about Celtic,” Frimpong said in an interview while explaining the motive behind his move.

For former England star Danny Mills, the fact that the defender was going to receive more wages was a key factor in deciding to leave Celtic.

“Well, I think wages and length of contract also came into that as well. The Bundesliga is probably the next best league after the Premier League and the Spanish League in terms of competition.

“There are less teams in it, but still some very, very good teams as well,” Mills told Football Insider.

He continued, “If we’re gonna be honest, it probably comes down to the fact that Leverkusen have offered him more money and more security.”

Jeremie Frimpong, 20, has already played a few matches for Bayer Leverkusen and hopes to help the club secure a place in next season’s Uefa Champions League.
