Ghanaians react to news of late Opoku Afriyie

Ghanaians have taken to social media to pay tribute to former Black Stars and Asante Kotoko striker Opoku Afriyie who died on Sunday.

Afriyie popularly called ‘Beyie’ (the wizard) passed on in Kumasi where he has been living at the age of 75.

Beyie was part of the Black Stars squad that won the 1978 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

He finished off a brilliant spell at the tournament with a brace in the final to help Ghana lift her third title against Uganda.

He was the top scorer in the Ghana Premier League in 1979 and 1981.

After retiring from playing, he took up roles as team manager and welfare officer of the Black Stars. He was also named team manager of Kotoko in 2003.

Details of his death remain unknown.
