Ghana's Joseph Paintsil happy to break goal drought for Genk

Ghanaian youngster Joseph Paintsil has praised his Genk team-mates for helping him through his goal drought after he bagged a brace in a 5-1 victory over Gent on Sunday.

Paintsil failed to score in his first seven games in the Belgium First division league following a move from Ferencvaros during the summer before finally breaking his duck against Gent on Sunday.

The 20-year-old midfielder scored from close range in the 19th minute latching on to Sammatta’s low drive cross with his left foot to double the advantage for Genk after Samatta had opened the scoring in the 17th minute.

Ndongala scored the third goal for the away side in the 27th minute. But Dylan Bromm pulled one back for Gent in the 40th minute to give them some hope of a comeback.

But a 67th-minute Malinovski strike made it a tall order for the home side crushing any hope of a comeback.

The former Tema Youth player then followed up with a second goal in the 73rd minute to condemn Gent to their heaviest defeat this season at the Ghelamco Arena.

He, however, praised his teammates for a great away performance and perfect response to last Thursday’s 3-1 defeat to Sarspborg 08 in the Europa league.

Speaking in an interview with Ghanacrusader.com, Joseph revealed his happiness to end his goal drought for the club.

“I’m very happy today, we played very well as a team and finally I got my goals. Even though I wasn’t pressured when the goals were not coming but I always felt I needed my first goal to come," he said.

He also admitted how tough an opposition Gent were on the day.

“Gent are a good team here in Belgium, they play and defend well, but we put in a good performance and deserved the win today."

“I really wanted to score my first goal and I’m happy and thank God to have scored two goals today.”

Coach Paul Clement named Joseph Paintsil in his starting eleven on Sunday and that paid off with a brace from the young forward.

KRC Genk didn’t take long to break down a resolute Gent defence.

Genk are now on top of the league table after 10 games with 26 points.
