GPL, DOL, Women's League stays suspended despite lifting of partial lockdown

The 2019/2020 football season in Ghana will remain suspended despite the decision from the government to lift the partial lockdown in the Greater Kumasi, Greater Accra, Tema, and Kasoa.

The Ghana Premier League, the Division One League, and the Women's Premier League have been suspended for the past 4 weeks as a result of the ban on public gatherings and partial restrictions which was directed by the government to help curb the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease.

On Sunday, April 19, 2020, President Nana Addo announced that the government has lifted the ban on partial restrictions but will keep the ban on public gatherings in place.

H.E said: “I must make it clear, at the outset, that lifting these restrictions does not mean we are letting our guard down. All other measures are still firmly in place. For the avoidance of doubt, the earlier measures announced on Wednesday, 15th March, which have been extended, are still very much in force and have not been relaxed. I am demanding even greater adherence to these measures.

“In here, I am referring to the suspension of all public gatherings, including conferences, workshops, funerals, parties, nightclubs, drinking spots, beaches, festivals, political rallies, religious activities, and sporting events”.

With the emphasis on the ban on 'sporting events', it means that the football season in the country must remain suspended until that one is also lifted.

In a related development, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has advised all clubs in the country to comply according and desist from training until the ban on public gatherings is no more in effect.
