GPL relegation: GFA asks CAS to reject King Faisal’s stay request

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to reject King Faisal's request for a stay of the GFA's Disciplinary and Appeal Committees' decision to relegate the club from the Ghana Premier League.

This is according to documents shared by Joy Sports on Wednesday.

GFA's lawyer, Naa Odofoley Nortey, argued that King Faisal's request does not meet the "balance of interest" test that CAS uses to determine whether to grant a stay.

Nortey said that the GFA and the teams that have qualified for the Ghana Premier League would suffer more if King Faisal's request is granted, as they would have to make significant changes to their plans for the upcoming season.

King Faisal filed an appeal at CAS after losing its protest against Tamale City for alleged double registrations of player Jireh Kojo Nissi/Isaac Mensah at the GFA.

The GFA's Disciplinary Committee found that King Faisal had failed to prove that Tamale City had committed any wrongdoing, and the Appeal Committee upheld the decision.

King Faisal argued that it would suffer "grave consequences" if it is relegated and cannot participate in the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League.

The club also said that it would be too late for it to be restored to the league if it wins its case at CAS after the season has started.

The GFA rejected these arguments, saying that King Faisal's concerns are "mere speculation" and that there is no guarantee that the club would be restored to the league even if it wins its case.
