GPL: 'We'll continue to be scared of playing in Africa when the best players leave after every season' - Nii Lante Vanderpuye

Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, says Ghanaian clubs will continue to be scared in Africa inter-club competitions when the best players are sold after every season.

He believes the massive player exodus every year is costing the quality of the league, hence the recent poor performances in Africa.

The Odododiodio Member of Parliament added that the lack of quality in the local league is having a toll on the national team performances as well.

“If we continue to let every player just leave, we may not have good quality players in the local league and our league will be substandard," he told Citi Sports.

"Look, today, compare our league with even the Ethiopian league, the Tanzanian league, the Zambian league, there’s a huge difference, that’s the reason why these teams are beating us now.

"Ghana is going to play Comoros, and we are shaking, we are going to play Equatorial Guinea and we are shaking, Cape Verde, we are shaking, how can these countries scare Ghana in any football tournament at any level? Today we are scared.”

Due to their incapacity to compete on a par with other teams from other regions of the continent, Ghanaian representatives have suffered massives failures in CAF inter Club tournaments.

Medeama SC and Dreams FC will represent the country at this year’s CAF Inter Club Competitions with the objective to qualify to the money zone of the competitions.
