Group stages of CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup to start in February 2022

The group stages of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup for next season will begin in February and finish in early April.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) issued a statement on Tuesday establishing the calendar for both competitions, with the dates of both finals set for May 22-29.

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be held in April and May, respectively.

The competitions, however, will begin this year with two rounds of qualifiers (preliminary rounds) in September and October.

In late November and early December, the Confederation Cup will host its Second Preliminary Round, an additional round of qualifiers.

CAF also announced a list of countries that would be permitted to enter two clubs in both competitions during the 2021/22 season.

The countries are: Algeria, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Guinea, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia and Zambia.

CAF also announced an amendment to the regulation that allows for five substitutes per team every match.

FIFA introduced the regulation last year in response to the increased physical demands placed on players as a result of league suspensions due to the COVID-19 epidemic, followed by fast reductions and crowded schedules.

“Accordingly, each club will be allowed to register 40 players instead of the regulatory 30. Nine substitutes will be allowed on the bench instead of the regular seven,” the statement noted.
