Gundogan lined up for Man City playing return next week

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan could make a playing return next week.

The Manchester Evening News says Gundogan could play his first game of football in eight months when Manchester City take on Girona.

The Blues have arranged a friendly for three days after their Premier League opener at Brighton; they don't play again in the league until the following Monday when they take on Everton at home.

Gundogan has been sidelined since last December with cruciate ligament damage in his knee and hopes of him appearing in pre season for the Blues have been dashed.

City boss Pep Guardiola said: "Maybe he'll get minutes in Girona. I don't know, we're going to ask the doctor because of course he was injured for a long time.

"We don't want to take any risks.

"He has to be strong but of course his quality is perfect for the way we want to play."
