Hamburger SV defender Stephan Ambrosius has sustained a serious knee injury and is set to miss the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old has been one of the key cog of the team this season, making 27 appearances so far.

Ambrosius tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while training with his teammates on Tuesday ahead of their clash against Karlsruher SC on Thursday.

He has already suffered a cruciate ligament rupture a few years ago thereby increasing fears at the club over a long-term lay off.

The highly-rated youngster turned down an invitation to play for the senior national team of Ghana, the Black Stars in the last two games of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe.

Hamburger SV, who are chasing promotion to the Bundesliga next season are third on the league table with 51 points after 30 games played.
