Ben Nunoo Mensah, the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), has called on the leadership of Hearts of Oak to expand fan ownership by enabling more supporters to acquire shares in the club.
Back in 2011, the Ghana Premier League outfit initiated a public offering of shares, which saw Togbe Afede XIV securing a significant stake in the club. However, in the ensuing thirteen years, the representation of supporters among the top shareholders has diminished, leaving some loyal fans disheartened.
Speaking to Accra-based Radio Gold in an interview, Nunoo Mensah stressed the pivotal role of supporters in the club's activities.
He pointed out the existence of unsubscribed shares and those yet to be made available, suggesting that the current moment presents an ideal opportunity to involve fans and foster their ownership.
"The supporters play a crucial role in our present endeavors. There are shares still available for subscription or yet to be floated. Why not seize this moment, armed with the knowledge and awareness supporters now have about the club, and invite them to participate by floating these shares again?" he proposed.
Nunoo Mensah advocated for a systematic approach, proposing the development of a clear plan for issuing shares and launching educational campaigns to enlighten supporters about the advantages of ownership.
"Let's devise a roadmap for the issuance of shares and then embark on educating the supporters. With the right approach, I believe they will enthusiastically embrace the opportunity to invest in Accra Hearts of Oak," he stated optimistically.
Expressing confidence in the fans' unwavering commitment to the club, Nunoo Mensah envisioned a scenario where supporters would actively engage in owning shares of Accra Hearts of Oak.
Recognizing the mutually beneficial relationship between clubs and their communities, he underscored the importance of fan participation in ensuring the club's enduring success.
"I am confident that, given what they've witnessed, the supporters will eagerly come forward to own Accra Hearts of Oak. Every club draws its strength from the community it serves," he emphasized.
Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak is preparing to take on Medeama SC in their upcoming Matchday 25 clash at Akoon Park, with the aim of returning to winning ways. Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00 GMT.
