Hearts of Oak MD not thinking of laying off workers amid COVID-19

Hearts of Oak Managing Director Frederick Moore has disclosed that his outfit are thinking of laying off staff during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Phobians, like many clubs in the Ghana Premier League, have been hit by the COVID-19 crisis and there are fears there could be layoffs.

However, Moore says despite the club employing a lot of people, nothing concrete has been reached at the board level.

"We haven't come to any definite conclusion yet. There are a number of reasons, but the critical one is that we don't know how long this is going to take. Because even if the all-clear is given, there is still a possibility that large gatherings - like 20 or 30 or 40 thousand people gathering at a match - might not happen this side of the 19/20 season," Moore told BBC in an interview.

"We employ a lot of people. We've got three levels of football. We've got a senior team, we've got the youth team and then we've got the under 17s.

"So we've got a lot more people to feed and provide money for whereas some of the smaller clubs will just have the first team. We in the last year kept the whole of our workforce and paid them for the whole year. A lot of them allowed a majority of their workforce to go and then recruited them when the football season started again."
