Hearts of Oak settle on a Dutch tactician Martin Koopman as new head coach - Reports

Accra Hearts of Oak are close to settling on Dutch trainer, Martin Koopman as the new head coach of the club, the local media have reported.

The Ghana Premier League have been in search of a new club following the exit of Slavko Matic.

The Serbian trainer who replaced Samuel Boadu midway through last season on a two-year deal was forced to leave the club due to poor rund of results.

Former assistant coach, David Ocloo was named as the interim manager. Having steered the club to finish 12th last season, Ocloo and the club mutually parted ways.

Nigerian coach, Paul Aigbogun and Tunisian coach, Khalil Abid were both linked to the vacant job.

However, Martin Koopman is now the favourite to be named as the new head coach for the Phobian club.

It is believed that technical director, Rene Hiddink recommended Koopman to the hierarchy of the club.

The 67-year-old is a former Netherlands defender who played for Go Ahead Eagles, FC Twente and Cambuur.

Koopman is expected to land in Ghana on Tuesday, August 15 to finalize a deal to lead the club for next season’s domestic campaign which starts in September.

His managerial career has seen him work as a youth team and assistant coach at his former club, Go Ahead Eagles and Cambuur.

His other works include stints at FC Groningen, FC Den Bosch, Veendam, AS Vita Club, Saudi Arabia, Shenyang Ginde, Roda JC, Al Nassr, RKC Waalwijk, Aruba and lastly Maldives, all as an assistant coach.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak will open their 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season with an away game against Real Tamale United at the Aliu Mahama Stadium.
