Hughes immune to sack talk

Published on: 23 November 2018

Beleaguered Southampton manager Mark Hughes insists speculation regarding his future at St Mary's is not fazing him.

The former Manchester United star has only been in charge of Saints for eight months but a poor start to the campaign has led to rumours circulating suggesting the club are losing patience with the 55-year-old.

Southampton face a crunch game on Saturday against Fulham, who Hughes managed for the 2010/11 campaign. Saints are 15/8 to win at Craven Cottage and 5/2 to keep a clean sheet in the match.

Fulham, who will be managed by Claudio Ranieri for the first time, are 4/7 to be relegated this season, while Southampton are 4/1 to go down.

Hughes said ahead of the game against the rock-bottom Cottagers: "There will always be speculation and I call it 'noise'. Once a manager departs after a lot of noise that noise switches to someone else and all the negative stats come out.

"A little bit of the noise is around me at the moment which is the nature of the role that I have. It will go away with a few good results.

"It becomes a little bit predictable and you understand how it works. After 20 years doing this job, it's nothing I haven't seen and dealt with before. It's part of the job and doesn't faze me."
