Hughes unaffected by board change

Southampton manager Mark Hughes says that his position at the club has not been affected by a boardroom change.

Les Reed has left his position as vice-chairman at St Mary's Stadium, with the club announcing that "constructive action" was required to "get results back on track".

I don't think my position has been diminished too much in that regard.

Reed had been in that position within the club since 2010 and chairman Ralph Krueger said he hopes the change would provide new drive and direction to the football operations team.

That puts the spotlight upon manager Hughes with the team having won just one league game this season, sitting just one point above the bottom three.

The Saints play Watford at home on Saturday and, at a press conference ahead of the game, Hughes said the change at the top would not affect him.

He told reporters: "The club was in a difficult situation when I came in late last year. We were able turn it around in the summer as a consequence of seeing the job that I did at first hand and how I operate and how I go about my business.

"Although Les is no longer around as a sounding board and as a supportive guy in the background there are still a lot of people here that felt I was the right man for the job so I don't think my position has been diminished too much in that regard."

Southampton, without a win  in seven games are 11/8 to get a much needed three points on Saturday with Watford 19/10 and the draw 23/10.

In contrast to their struggling hosts, the visitors on Saturday are having an impressive start to the new season; Watford currently sit eighth in the table and are seemingly set to reward manager Javi Gracia with a new three-year contract.

Southampton are 4/1 to be relegated at the end of the season while Watford are 12/1 to finish in the top six.
