Hughes welcomes striker options

Southampton manager Mark Hughes says he and his backroom staff are still trying to work out which two players form the best strike partnership for his team.

Charlie Austin and summer signing Danny Ings were handed starts in the 2-1 defeat at Everton last time out, with the former having taken on a lone striking role a week earlier in the goalless draw at home to Burnley.

I think they are all quite complementary in terms of whatever combination I put together.

Hughes also has Manolo Gabbiadini, Shane Long and Sam Gallagher as alternative options in attack and the Welshman is happy to have different styles of forward to choose from.

Ahead of a Saturday visit from Leicester City, Hughes told the Daily Echo: "All the strikers are different and they all have different strengths and capabilities and things they are better at than other things.

"I think they are all quite complementary in terms of whatever combination I put together.

"At this moment we are still looking at where the best combinations lie and we are still in a learning process in terms of that."

Hughes will be hoping to help Saints gain revenge for a 4-1 drubbing in this fixture last season, when the Foxes took full control of the game by securing a three-goal half-time advantage.

Southampton may be boosted by the visitors being without star striker Jamie Vardy, who begins a three-match suspension following his red card against Wolves last weekend.

The hosts are 29/20 to defeat Leicester and are 10/1 to do so by a 2-1 scoreline, with Ings 11/5 to score at any time in the game.
