Hull City 3-3 Crystal Palace: Eagles Deny Tigers in Another Scintillating Spectacle for the Neutrals

Published on: 09 December 2016

After one of the most turgid opening hours of the season, Crystal Palace's trip to Hull exploded into life in the final 20 minutes to provide another thrilling finale -complete with two moments of individual magic from Wilfried Zaha and Adama Diomande.

Palace fans will be content that they were not at the end of another heart-wrenching spectacle, having witnessed their team capitulate to 5-4 Swansea some weeks back.

After a fortnightwhich had seen the vast majority of the media's attention focusing on Zaha's international future rather than his on-pitch exploits, the Ivory Coast's newest selection headache produced a stunning shimmy and shot to tear apart a Tigers defence which had previously looked relatively untroubled, putting his side 2-1 up after the two teams had traded penalties.

The corner was cleared to @wilfriedzaha, who beat two or three defenders and thundered it into the top corner. WOW. #HULCRY pic.twitter.com/lbMLBBISf3

That touch of class, which had been sorely lacking for so much of the match, sparked an instant reaction from Hull and Diomande - whose brilliant turn, nutmeg and shot levelled the scoring just two minutes later.

With Palace no doubt feeling echoes of last month's dramatic capitulation against Swansea, Alan Pardew's men began to sit a little more defensively. Jake Livermore was unimpressed though, scything through a sea of red and blue shirts to give the home side the lead with just over 10 minutes to play.

Earlier on in the piece, it had seemed that the afternoon's main talking point would be Mike Jones' decision to award Hull a penalty for Scott Dann's attempted tackle on Robert Snodgrass.

3 - Hull have scored as many goals today as they did in their previous six Premier League games combined (3). Unleashed.

Sometimes, footballers who dive to win a penalty are told that they should go and make a living in Hollywood - told that they should pick up Leo DeCaprio's Oscar for their play-acting.

The dive which won Hull City an early penaltyagainst Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon, though, was less The Revenant and moreThe Room. Snodgrass, a footballing disgrace though, threw himself to the floor in Palace's penalty area in reaction to an imagined touch from Dann before dusting himself off to slot the resulting spot kick home.

Awful dive from Snodgrass who gets up from the grass to score from the spot.

Perhaps weighed down with a guilty conscience, the Scot made amends for his flop early in the second half, tugging down Zaha in his own box to give Christian Benteke the chance to level the game from the spot. The Belgian made no mistake.

22 “ Christian Benteke has now scored against 22 different Premier League teams; the same total as Romelu Lukaku. Compatriots.

A frenetic final few minutes kept the sparse crowd inside the KCOM Stadium on the edges of their seats until the final minute - and it was former Hull loanee Fraizer Campbell who completed an incredible denouement to the match with an equaliser in the 89th minute.

Palace's ability to score remains unquestioned as they battle against the drop - no team outside of the top four has scored more goals than them this season - but more defensive calamities will have Alan Pardew scratching his head ahead of clashes with Chelsea and Manchester United before Christmas.
