Man United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has opened up on the decision to play for England ahead of Ghana at the international level.

The 19-year-old was born in the United Kingdom but of Ghanaian heritage and could have played for the Black Stars at senior level.

But he chose to play for the Three Lions after a breakthrough season with the Red Devils.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday ahead of their second Euro 2024 group game against Denmark on Thursday, Mainoo was asked about his Ghanaian roots.

"I'm proud of my Ghanaian heritage but it has always been a dream to play for England. I'm happy to be here. I considered it, but I want to play for England."

Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo closed the door on possibly playing for Ghana after making his England debut in an international tournament, coming on as a substitute for the last five minutes of play against Serbia in Euro 2024.

Prior to the match on Sunday, Mainoo had only made three appearances for the Three Lions and was still eligible to play for the Black Stars if he decided to.

He was being courted by the Ghana Football Association after making his breakthrough for Man United at the start of the season.
