I have made huge sacrifices for the Black Stars - Stephen Appiah

Former Black Stars skipper, Stephen Appiah has recounted how he paid winning bonuses and also used his pocket money to pay for plane tickets for his playing mates to honour national team call-up.

The former Juventus ace is famously remembered for leading the senior national team to qualify for its maiden World Cup appearance in 2006 in Germany.

Speaking to Kumasi-based Sompa FM, Appiah was expressing his disappointment over the lack of involvement of former players in the administration of football.

Appiah maintained that they have done enough to merit a place in the administration of the game.

He revealed that there was a time players declined to welcome invitations to play for the Black Stars but he used his own money to pay for flight tickets and also pay winning bonuses.

"There was a time nobody wanted to play the Black Stars," he told Kumasi-based Sompa FM.

"There was a time I used my money to pay for plane tickets. I also paid winning bonuses so when you see what is happening today you feel bad," he added.

Appiah also led the team to book a place in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa where they played in the quarterfinal of the Mundial.
