‘I looked up to Essien and Muntari’ – Cercle Brugge midfielder Francis Abu

Ghanaian youngster Francis Abu has named Ghana’s greats Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari as midfielders he looked up to whiles growing up.

The 22-year-old enjoyed an outstanding first season with Cercle Brugge, making 26 appearances and scoring three goals in the process.

Speaking to Ghanasoccernet, the midfielder disclosed he looked up to the Chelsea and Inter Milan legends as he seeks to reach the heights of the former Ghana internationals.

"I think every young football Ghanaian player growing up especially me, I looked up to the likes of Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari as midfielder and I was inspired by their passion for the national team of Ghana and I will love to represent my country as well," he said.

Meanwhile, the enterprising midfielder is hoping for a much better campaign with Belgian outfit Cercle Brugge.

Francis is expected to line up for Cercle Brugge in the season opener against champions Royal Antwerp on Sunday.

"I always have inspiration playing football because I’m very ambitious person. "My goal is always to be okay at the highest level possible," he added.

"My teammates welcomed me comfortably into the squad so therefore I was able to adapt very quickly. Coaches and other stuff members also helpful in other aspects of my active time here."

"I expect good team performances through the season because we know ourselves for one year now so therefore we would be able to perform even better this season,"
