Former Black Stars striker Prince Tagoe has revealed that he played a different role than he was accustomed to in the 2010 world cup hence his dry spell during the tournament.
Ghana managed to reach the quarter-final, a remarkable achievement. However, Prince Tagoe was constantly criticized by fans for his barren spell in front of goal.
In response, the 33-year-old revealed that he was shoved to the wing, thereby reducing his efficiency.
“For me I handled the criticism from fans at 2010 world cup very well because I was being told by the coaches that the tactical play is different from what fans are seeing. People know Prince Tagoe is a goal scorer but during the world cup I was not scoring but the role I was given, I was supposed to be on the right wing," he told Joy FM.
"I was being told that whenever I lose the ball, I should come behind the center line and help the defenders. Whenever we are building from the back I was instructed to provide the ball for the striker to score."
"When Asamoah was injured I was paired with Junior Agogo and sometimes Matthew Amoah but when Asamoah came back, plans had to change and he had to be the striker so I played a different role."
