Accra Lions Football Club, since ascending to the Ghana Premier League in 2021-2022, had never beaten their city rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak, until May 1, 2024.

Accra Lions triumphed 1-0 over Hearts at the Accra Sports Stadium, with Ibrahim Issah securing the winning goal, which is their first win in six league games.

The momentous win propelled Lions to third place in the Ghana Premier League standings, while Hearts of Oak plummeted to 12th place following their fourth loss in five games.

After stunning Asante Kotoko with a 3-2 upset win in Kumasi, Lions added another remarkable feat by defeating Hearts.

Head coach Ibrahim Tanko attributed the victory to his team's belief.

“I said before the game that there is always a first time and the way we are playing this season, definitely we can beat any team and I congratulate the boys.”

Accra Lions will host Aduana FC, the side directly below them in fourth, in match week 29 of the Ghana Premier League on Monday.
