Ibrahim Tanko hints on inviting Felix Afena-Gyan for upcoming U-23 AFCON in Morocco

Black Meteors coach, Ibrahim Tanko has hinted that Felix Afena-Gyan is likely to be named in Ghana's squad for the upcoming U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The US Cremonese striker dominated the headline for the wrong reasons after he turned down a call-up for the final round of qualifiers against Algeria.

Ghana however recorded a 2-1 aggregate scoreline to secure qualification for the tournament that would be hosted in Morocco later this year.

However, on Friday, the draw for the tournament was held with Ghana being housed in Group A alongside the host (Morocco), Congo and Guinea.

And Tanko says he is open to building a good team and hinted at the likely return of the former AS Roma striker.

"Every good player that can help us, we will invite him. Of course, we have Fatawu (Issahaku) Ernest Nuamah, Kamaldeen can play, Afena Gyan can play, Essiem, Salim, Zuberu…all of them are there," he told Footballmadeinghana.com.

"We are also looking at other players who are qualified to play so definitely we will do a very good selection for Ghana so that we will break that jinx since 2004,” he added.

Group B also features holders Egypt, Mali, Gabon and Niger in what promises to be a high-flying show.

Group A matches will be held at Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex while Group B matches will take place at the Grand Stade de Tanger, in Tangier.

The first three nations will get their ticket for the Summer Olympics in 2024.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off from 24 June to 08 July 2023 in Morocco.
