Icardi hints at Inter extension

Published on: 01 December 2018

Argentina striker Mauro Icardi has played down renewed talk of a big-money move to Real Madrid, saying he is close to signing a contract extension with Inter Milan.

The 25-year-old, whose current deal with the Nerazzurri runs until the summer of 2021, has been linked with the Spanish giants for some time, but Icardi insists that nothing is likely in the near future.

The contract renewal will come too, at the right moment.

He told the Corriere dello Sport: "I don't think this is the right time, considering how things are going (at Real Madrid).

"Besides, I am happy where I am. The contract renewal will come too, at the right moment. We have plenty of time.

"Did I ever come close to leaving? You'd have to ask the club. I always made my objectives clear.

"The first, to get Inter back into the Champions League, has been achieved. The second, win something with Inter. This is a more complete squad than in the past, certainly."

Icardi has been with Inter since the summer of 2013 and has scored 117 goals in 195 appearances in all competitions following his arrival from Serie A rivals Sampdoria.

On the international front he has won a mere eight caps for Argentina, having been overlooked for the World Cup finals earlier this year.

However, he did net his first goal for the Albiceleste in the recent 2-0 friendly victory over Mexico in Mendoza.

Meanwhile, Inter are 5/2 to top Serie A this season if Juventus are excluded, with Icardi 11/1 to finish as topscorer in the Italian top-flight.
