We played football for the love of the game; they're playing to be bought now – Osei Kofi

Ghana football legend Rev Osei Kofi believes now Ghanaian young talents are playing football to market themselves.

The two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner with Ghana claimed that they were playing for the love of the game at the time, which is not the case now.

Osei Kofi was part of the squads that won the Africa Cup of Nations for Ghana in 1963 and 1965 and was part of the famous fearsome five that included Peter Lamptey, Mahama Acquah, Anas Seidu, and Robert Hammond.

“We were amateurs; we played for the love of the game and for Ghana. But now, they are professionals, so they are playing for themselves to be bought,” he told Joy Sports in an interview.

The recent poor performances of the Black Stars at major tournaments have been attributed to lack of patriotism from the players as they don’t want to commit and get injured.

Ghana has not won the Africa Cup of Nations since 1982.
