Ancelotti is being linked with the post after the dismissal of Giampiero Ventura. Ancelotti is available after his sacking by Bayern Munich.

Spalletti, after victory over Atalanta, said: "I think he is the best option of all, he has to have strong shoulders, they need to be strong because the trainer gets all the blame.

"Everyone who attacked Ventura from the beginning said he was to blame for so many things, I think it is exaggerated.

"Now we're in a new situation, something that has never happened before. Things must work out over time."

Spalletti also backed Nantes coach Claudio Ranieri for the job.

"Definitely he's one of those who has wide shoulders, has experience in managing a team as important as Italy, there are others, it depends on so many things."
