Jose Mourinho Questions Mentality of 'Injured' Man Utd Players After Victory at Swansea

Published on: 06 November 2016

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has slammeddefenders Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw for failing to make themselves available for the club's 3-1 win at Swansea on Sunday, claiming his players need to "go to the limit."

Mourinho, who was delighted with his side's dominance in the win in South Wales, was without a number of first team players because of injury and suspension. However, England pair Smalling and Shaw had told their boss that they didn't feel as though they were 100% fit - much to Mourinho's disappointment - and were left out as a result.

Mourinho had told MUTV that Smalling "doesn't feel that he can play 100 per cent with his pain", while he also revealed a conversation he held with Shaw the morning of kick off. Mourinho said: "Luke Shawtold me this morning that he was not in the condition to play, so we had to build a defensive line."

The absences appeared to irk Mourinho and he let it show in his post-match interview, according to theMail, claiming that the mentality of his players needs changing if they are to succeed.

He said:"There is a difference between the brave, who want to be there at any cost, and the ones for who a little pain can make a difference.

"If I were to speak with the many great football people of this team, they will say many times they played without being 100 per cent. For the team you have to do anything. That is my way of seeing.

"We have players with problems. To compete you have to go to the limit. It is cultural for some - and this is my culture. More than me, it is Man United.

"With the help of people like Phil Jones, who was playing without having even trained, Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney, with these people it will not be an impossible mission but a possible mission."

A goal from Paul Pogba and two from Zlatan Ibrahimovic ensured victory for Mourinho's side at the Liberty Stadium.
