Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been suspended and fined by the FA after he was charged with improper conduct following an incident during Sunday's clash with West Ham in which he kicked a water bottle and was subsequently sent to the stands.

Mourinho will serve a one-game ban 'with immediate effect' after the ruling by the FA's Independent Regulatory Commission on Wednesday afternoon.

It means the Portuguese, who will also have to pay £16,000, will be absent from the evening EFL Cup quarter final when West Ham return to Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Key midfielder Paul Pogba will also be missing for the game after he collected a fifth yellow card of the season at the weekend. Marouane Fellaini is another who is serving a one-game ban.

There had been rumours of a sensational return to action for exiled star Bastian Schweinsteiger in light of the aforementioned bans and a possible injury to Michael Carrick. However, Carrick is now expected to play, meaning that Schweinsteiger is unlikely to start after all.
